Spring workshops, training will introduce new process for OPTPromotion and Tenure

This April, UF will introduce a new workflow and open a new online system for its annual promotion and tenure process.  Online Promotion & Tenure, or “OPT,” will employ the myUFL system for uploading, reviewing, tracking and signing-off on all promotion, tenure and/or permanent status packets produced by faculty candidates.

Employee Education Program accepting applications for summer semesters

The Employee Education Program (EEP) is a popular benefit available to eligible UF faculty and staff. The program provides tuition assistance for up to six credit hours of eligible college-level courses per semester. In the summer, a combined total of six credits taken during semesters A, B and C may be covered by the EEP.

Annual performance appraisals due March 31

Performance appraisals for all TEAMS and USPS employees for the period of March 1, 2012, through February 28, 2013, must be completed and signed by March 31, 2013. Annual performance appraisals are designed to document and summarize feedback that employees have received throughout the year. For more information about the performance appraisal process, please see the February issue of the InfoGator.

File 2012 flexible spending account claims by April 15

Employees enrolled in a medical or dependent-care reimbursement account for the 2012 plan year should note the following deadlines:
  • March 15, 2013, marks the end of the 2013 grace period and is the last date to receive services and claim them on your 2012 reimbursement account. Receipts dated after March 15 will be applied to your account for 2013, if applicable.
  • April 15, 2013, is the deadline for filing medical and/or dependent care claims for your 2012 account.

The Digging the Love! event to raise funds for playground renovations atBaby Gator centers exceeded expectations. Chris Machen andDanette Good co-hosted the event at the President’s house, where more than 200 guests enjoyed fine dining and beverages while engaging in some good-natured bidding wars over 50 silent and live auction items including paintings from local artists, luxury vacations, dining certificates, health and fitness packages, Gator items and even a handmade quilt.

Annual drawing awards tuition assistance to 50 children of TEAMS employees

The drawing for the University of Florida’s Higher Education Opportunity (HEO) program for the 2013-14 academic year will be held on Monday, March 11, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the HR Building, Room 120. 

Network with local businesses at the Small Business Conference and Trade Fair

UF will host its 22nd Annual Small Business Conference & Trade Fair on March 28 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center. The conference will include exhibits by small and minority businesses, corporate partners, local entities and agencies from around the state.

Strong passwords essential for protection

In light of the recent phishing scams plaguing UF, it is important to consider the effect weak passwords have on data privacy. If you respond to a link in a phishing email, not only can you potentially be coaxed into giving away important passwords—you may expose your laptop, phone or computer to malware and other types of intrusions.

Spring financial planning courses offered

Two courses in University Retirement’s financial planning series will be held in Room 120 of the HRS Building next month. To register, login to myUFL and navigate to Main Menu > My Self Service > Request Training Enrollment.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, making it a great time to talk to your doctor about scheduling your colonoscopy. Colonoscopy screenings are recommended for most people beginning at age 50, then every five to ten years after that.

College of Dentistry offers special pricing to UF and Shands employees
UF’s Department of Endodontics offers 10 percent off standard treatments for UF and Shands full-time employees and 5 percent off for their dependents. Employees may pay via payroll deduction for services including root canals, internal bleaching, endodontic surgery, root canal retreatments and dental trauma care.

Pet wellness plans now available at UF Small Animal Hospital
To encourage pet owners to take a more active role in keeping their pets healthy, the UF Small Animal Hospital is now offering personalized wellness plans for pets. Each plan provides discounted veterinary services for one year, saving pet owners an average of hundreds of dollars per year on visits they were already planning to make.

Interested in learning about your running mechanics?
A UF research study will be measuring joint motions and mechanics of individuals 16 to 75 years old while they run in their typical exercise gear. The energy cost of running form and surveys about how participants feel about their running program and their health will also be measured.

Smoking cessation support offered year-round
The EAP continues to offer Smoking Cessation Groups throughout the year and individual coaching sessions for those who cannot attend group. New this year is a two-hour seminar designed to enable participants to get all the essential information they need in order to quit tobacco successfully, including free nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and up to three months of medications.

Policy affects use of vacation leave prior to terminating employment
Effective July 1, UF policy will allow vacation-accruing employees to request up to 160 hours (four weeks) of vacation leave in conjunction with termination from UF.

Free File available to those who qualify
The IRS and its private-sector partners have made Free File available to anyone with an adjusted gross income of $57,000 or less in 2012.
