April 7: Saba Mahmood: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject

Highly recognized social anthropologist Saba Mahmood will speak on Thursday, April 7, at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora about her influential book The Politics of Piety: The Islamic Revival and the Feminist Subject. The book is considered to be a groundbreaking analysis of Islamist cultural politics through the lens of a grassroots women’s piety movement. Mahmood, a professor of anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, will address the controversy sparked by the publication and the scholarly discussions that have ensued. April 13: China and Africa: A Growing Relationship

David Shinn, a former United States ambassador to Ethiopia and Burkina Faso, will speak on Wednesday, April 13, at 6 p.m. in the Pugh Hall Ocora. Shinn will focus on the growing relationship between China and Africa and its implications in an increasingly global society. Shinn currently teaches international affairs at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The event is sponsored by the Center for African Studies, the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, the College of Journalism and Communications, the Department of Political Science and the African Students Union.
