Throughout the week of May 2 – 6, UF Human Resource Services has been hosting Wellness for Life Week, featuring presentations on a variety of topics to help you better prepare for retirement and maintain well-being as you age. Sessions from earlier this week focused financial wellness—including budgeting and savings, Social Security, health care costs, and retirement readiness—as well as emotional, social, and intellectual wellness. Several sessions were recorded and are now available for viewing.

Keeping the Brain Healthy On Tuesday, May 3, Leilani Doty, PhD, Associate Scientist and Co-Director of UF Memory Disorder Clinic, spoke on the importance of brain health and how to keep your brain functioning well throughout life.  View
Staying Connected: Volunteer Opportunities with UF and UF Health A panel of representatives from various UF and UF Health organizations shared information on their adult volunteer programs. View the recording to learn how to get involved and have a positive impact on your community.  View
Inside Out: Understanding Depression May’s Wellness Wednesday, on May 4, featured Rosa Parks, PhD, Outreach Coordinator and Clinical Assistant Professor for UF’s Counseling & Wellness Center. View the recording to learn how to identify and recognize sources and manifestations of depression and explore self-management strategies to care for yourself and others. View
Stay Strong: How to Minimize Age-Related Muscle Loss Age-related muscle loss begins as early as our 30s. In this session, Dr. Christy Carter of the Institute on Aging explored how aging impacts loss of muscle quality, leading to declining physical function and independence in older adults. Learn how diet and exercise can counteract these effects and increase quality of life. View

Representatives from UF’s retirement plan providers will be available to answer your questions from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 6.

All sessions will be held in Room 120 of the Human Resource Services Building at 903 West University Avenue. Pre-registration is not required, and free parking is available. If you have questions, email hrs-wellness@ufl.edu.

Additional “Working through Grief” Workshop on May 20

Loss through its many forms is all around us, especially as we age. Join Drs. Beth-Anne Blue and Laila Salem, licensed psychologists with the Employee Assistance Program, to learn how to cope with loss and skillfully move through grief.

Register now to attend on Friday, May 20, from noon-1 p.m. at the Office of Human Resource Services, 903 W. University Avenue, or email hrs-wellness@ufl.edu to join via live stream.

The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides a wide range of services, including individual employee evaluation and referral, consultation services for supervisors, workshops, training sessions and support groups. Up to six visits for individual consultation are available. These confidential sessions are provided by licensed mental health professionals employed by the University of Florida.
