Speaker series confronts subject of death from the humanities’ perspective

The Humanities Center at UF is currently in the midst of its yearlong speaker series, titled “Death: Confronting the Great Divide.” The eight-part series, which is bringing to UF nationally recognized scholars in a range of disciplines, aims to reveal how the humanities can help us understand one of the most integral parts of life—the end of life.  All events are free and open to the public.

On Thursday, Feb. 16, the center will welcome Isabel Moreira, professor and past chair of the History Department at the University of Utah, who will give a talk on “Preparing for Death: Reflections on Possession and Loss in Late Antiquity.” The talk will explore how individuals in the fifth through eighth centuries made personal decisions about their lives’ meaning in the midst of preparing for death.

The Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere, founded in 2005, builds on the work of individual departments to emphasize collaboration and critical discussion.
