New director of Center for Latin American Studies

Carlos de la Torre, a veteran researcher in the field of Latin American studies and former professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Kentucky, has been appointed director of the University of Florida Center for Latin American Studies, effective Aug. 2. As director, he will provide leadership to strengthen the center’s existing programs and spearhead innovation.

Throughout his career, de la Torre has directed multiple programs in universities across the U.S. and Ecuador, including the International Studies program at the University of Kentucky; the Political Studies and PhD program at FLACSO-Ecuador; and the Latino/a, Latin American, and Caribbean Studies program at Northeastern University.

De la Torre earned his BA in sociology with a certificate in Latin American Studies from UF in 1983 and served as the LASA Lecturing Fellow at UF’s Center for Latin American Studies in March 2006.
