UF welcomes record number of new faculty

More than 300 new faculty braved steady rainfall and navigated through students moving into their dorms last Friday to gather at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center’s Exactech Arena for the largest New Faculty Orientation in UF’s history. The university is welcoming nearly 600 new faculty this fall, due in large part to UF’s Faculty 500 hiring initiative.

“We are very excited to welcome this very talented cohort of scholars, clinicians and educators to UF,” said Chris Hass, associate provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs. “These individuals are among the best in their field and exhibit limitless potential.”

Following a warm welcome from UF President Kent Fuchs, the new faculty heard from a variety of UF administrators and fellow faculty on topics including tenure and promotion, research and grants, diversity and inclusion, and much more. All of the presentations as well as the session booklet are now available on the New Faculty Orientation section of the UFHR website.

Early in the day, faculty were also invited to visit UF at Work on Twitter to vote for their personalized hashtag—and elected #GatorFaculty as their new moniker. Attendees were encouraged to post a selfie or a photo at the event and to introduce themselves to their fellow faculty. New faculty, regardless of whether they attended the New Faculty Orientation, are encouraged to continue to post photos and introductions of themselves in the coming weeks.

“The efforts of our current faculty to recruit this talent to UF cannot be understated,” Hass added. “Our current faculty serve as exceptional role models and they will help this new cohort feel welcomed and inspired.”
