Tell us about your professional journey and how you came to be in your current position at UF.

I taught in Alachua County Public Schools for twenty-one years before joining the administration of P.K. Yonge as the supervisor of instructional practice, a special role created for the sole purpose of observing instructional practice and providing feedback to teachers. Shortly after joining the Blue Wave Family, I became assistant principal of instructional practice and took on more administrative duties. Later, I was appointed K-12 principal of the school, where I served for eight years before becoming director in June of 2025.

What motivated you to participate in the UF Academy?

On the Clifton Strengths Finder, my number one strength is “Learner.” I consistently feel compelled to learn more, especially in leadership development. When I learned about the program and the chance to explore UF beyond my campus, I was excited to capitalize on the opportunity.

What impact has the UF Academy had on you professionally and, if applicable, personally?

Participating in the UF academy allowed me to connect with fellow leaders across the UF campus. I have called on them in times of crisis for collaborative problem solving. During a particularly difficult time personally, I received mentorship and confidential support as I sought to navigate the best career course of action.

Are there specific resources or connections you made during the program that you found most valuable and why?

The connections I made with UF Human Resources and UF General Counsel have been most helpful to me. I have relied on the expertise of more seasoned leaders as I have faced challenges in these areas.

How have you applied what you learned in this program in your role as a leader?

I have reflected on my learning many times and consistently revisit information and skills gained during my UF Academy experience. I have been able to continue my learning through the post-Academy offerings, and this keeps leadership development front and center for me.

What would you tell a colleague who is considering applying to this program?

The Academy gives you space to step back from daily responsibilities and think more strategically about your role within the broader university mission. You gain insight into how UF operates as a complex organization and build a network of colleagues who become ongoing thought partners. If you’re open to learning and building relationships across campus, it’s an experience that stretches and strengthens your leadership in lasting ways.
