Celebrate APIDA with delicious recipes
Each May, we celebrate the generations of Asian, Pacific Islander and Desi Americans (APIDA) who have enriched America’s history and are instrumental in its future success. As part of the celebration, we’ve curated five recipes from different countries for you to try at home.
Korea — Kimchi is an incredibly popular side dish in Korea made with spices and fermented vegetables that is eaten with almost every meal. While many vegetables can be used to make Kimchi, napa cabbage is considered the traditional style. This recipe from Maangchi shows you how to make classic, spicy traditional napa cabbage kimchi called tongbaechu-kimchi.
China — Chinese steamed buns, or baozi, are delicious fist-sized dough balls with various meat fillings that are steamed until nice and plump. This recipe from The Woks of Life shows you how to make steamed buns with a delicious pork filling. You’ll also learn how to freeze and reheat the buns to enjoy at a later time.
Japan — Tonkotsu Ramen is a recipe for the dedicated cook, clocking in at a minimum of eight-hours of cook time. While time consuming, it is well worth it as the end result is a deliciously creamy pork bone broth served with long thin noodles and topped with pork belly, eggs and other ingredients. Check out this recipe from Joshua Weissman to learn how to prepare this dish.
Vietnam — Considered one of Vietnam’s most famous dishes, Pho is a delicious and flavorful broth poured over rice noodles and sliced meat, and topped with a handful of chopped herbs and chives. While the cooking process can be time consuming, the end result is a delicious soup that you’ll want to make over and over again. Check out this Vietnamese Pho recipe created by Recipe Tin Eats.
India — Tandoori chicken is a popular Indian dish where chicken marinated in yogurt and spices is cooked in a clay oven called a tandoor, which adds a smoky flavor to the chicken from the use of charcoals. The chicken can also be cooked in a traditional oven, stovetop or even grilled for that smoky flavor. Check out this tandoori chicken recipe created by Swasthi’s Recipes.
