Offering support to our UF community in the wake of Hurricane Helene
Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida as a category 4 storm with winds reaching 140 mph, ranking it among the most powerful to strike the United States. University of Florida facilities in Cedar Key, Live Oak and other locations were significantly affected, and repairs will take time, endurance and funds. In the wake of the storm, many people are wondering how to help their fellow Floridians who were hurt and impacted.
For people willing to give their time, the best option is via Volunteer Florida, which centrally organizes disaster-focused volunteer jobs across the impacted areas.
For people willing to donate money to the cause, there are a couple of options. You can donate to support impacted UF/IFAS facilities by giving to the Facilities Support Fund.
The Aid-a-Gator Program was also activated and offers support to UF employees experiencing a temporary financial hardship due to a catastrophic event such as the impact of a natural disaster or a public health emergency. The number of employees that can be helped, the amount of funds that can be distributed and even how long the program lasts solely depend on the amount of donations received. Click here to donate.
UF Health 6 West Unit Assistant Laurie McKinney and Registered Nurse Amanda Santoro are collecting supplies and monetary donations to create care kits for disaster victims as part of Convoy of Hope, a global, faith-based organization that serves vulnerable communities. Click here to view the supplies needed for the baby, family and feminine hygiene kits. All supplies must be new and can be dropped off at the Shands Cancer Hospital Orthopaedic Unit 6 West, south tower office 6105, no later than Oct. 31. Drop offs can be made Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday through Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. If you have any questions, call 352-733-0824 or 352-733-0961.
You can also donate more broadly to victims of the hurricane via the Red Cross or visit the FEMA website to find a list of trusted organizations.
Whether you help by raising awareness, volunteering or donating, your support will positively impact those affected by the storm.
